Replacement work on a state Route 322 bridge near Philipsburg is continuing, with a traffic switch coming next week, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. On Tuesday, June 20, traffic will be switching from the existing bridge to the temporary roadway and recently completed portion of the new bridge.

Medical marijuana proposal presented in Laurel Run

A proposal to develop a medical marijuana production facility in Laurel Run brought out more than a dozen curious neighbors to Thursday's borough council meeting. The group that wants to construct a processing facility for medicinal cannabis on about 5 acres of a parcel off Laurel Run Road promised to be good neighbors.

Volunteers were out in force Thursday to help the needy enjoy some good food and companionship for Thanksgiving. At the Ministerios Casa De Oracion Mahanaim church on Parrish Street, volunteers served up a Hispanic-style holiday meal consisting of various styles of rice, chicken and accompaniments, said Paula Lobo, the church's worship leader.

Pa. teen sentenced for ambulance theft

A teen accused of assaulting a man with a brick then leading police on a chase in a stolen ambulance last year was sentenced to two years probation after pleading no contest Friday to some of the charges. Destiny Noella McNeil, 19, of Nanticoke, entered the plea on a single felony count each of theft, fleeing, and simple assault.

Rice Twp. bridge reopens nearly 2 weeks ahead of schedule

A bridge over Laurel Run in the Laurel Lakes development was opened to traffic Monday afternoon, nearly two weeks ahead of schedule. Supervisor Robert Pipech, the township's road master, said guide rails still need to be installed on the span, but after inspecting the bridge on Monday he decided to open it to traffic.

Fire scares keep Tamaqua responders busy

Two fire calls within 20 minutes at two large residential complexes kept Tamaqua firefighters, police and paramedics busy Wednesday afternoon. Crews responded to a report of a commercial structure fire at Laurel Run Commons, 406 Pitt St., at 3 p.m. but found nothing at the scene.

Laurel Lakes culvert replacement to be completed next month

The Laurel Lakes culvert replacement project is well underway and should be completed by mid-October, the township's engineer reported at Wednesday night's supervisors meeting, Latona Trucking of Pittston was awarded a contract in July to replace the damaged culvert over Laurel Run at a cost of $157,671.35. The firm will install a 137-inch by 87-inch aluminized metal arch culvert.

Right-Of-Way Agreement Adds Acreage to Game Lands in Pennsylvania

Two state game lands tracts will grow by about 120 acres each through an agreement with the Transcontintal Gas Pipe Line Co. . State Game Lands 168 will pick up about 117 acres adjacent to the game lands in Eldred Township, Monroe County, and State Game Lands 300 will grow by about 120 acres in Jefferson Township, Lackawanna County.
